But when it comes to more specific issues, let's say science or IT, more work is needed.

Chrisitian Duncamb, director of English and Education Reform at the British Council, said recently that as the world becomes increasingly interrelated, mastery of English in specific contexts, such as that used for conducting research or business, is crucial.

He said that ensuring teachers of subjects other than English have an adequate proficiency in English is important for the realization of the government's policy on English Bilingual Education (EBE), which aims to see at least one international-standard school in every province, at which many classes are taught in English.

Since 2006, 112 schools have applied the EBE.

"A teacher is one of the most important key players in shaping a student's mind, especially those in the early stages of education. So there should be a guarantee that teachers have first mastered English so they can convey the message correctly," British Council education advisor Itje Chodidjah said on the sidelines of a recent symposium on bilingual education.

Based on her experience as a trainer, it takes at least two years before a teacher can really teach in English.

In addition, she said, the government should also assess teachers in order to gain a complete picture of their ability, including their knowledge of the content to be taught and their mastery of English.

"The ministry's Education Excellence Institute (LPMP), which has trainers in all of its chapters, can do this assessment," she said, adding that the trainers must first undergo training themselves. "This is where the British Council comes in."

The British Council has been cooperating with LPMP to train English teachers in several primary schools.

However, Itje is not yet sure when the training for trainers will be conducted as the thorough plan is still being deliberated. But several areas of focus have been identified including pedagogical ability, language level of teachers and learners and knowledge of the materials.

Director general of primary and secondary education at the ministry, Suyanto, said that although the policy had not progressed much, the government would continue to work on it and support schools in need of help.

As part of a similar effort, the Cultural and Language Faculty of the University of Indonesia (UI) also recently held training sessions for English teachers from 25 high schools in Depok, West Java.

Indah Welasasih Ludji, the coordinator of the English writing workshop, said that the training was held to help students prepare for English writing tasks in college as well as to prepare the teachers themselves so that they may comply with the government's policy on international standard schools.

"Many students may be able to speak English fluently, but not all of them know how to write scientific papers, or even write at all in English. And that often happens here," she said, adding that the training covered how to write functional and narrative prose as well as essays.

"In the future, we hope we can reach other schools outside Depok."

Sebagaimana M. Scott Peck mengatakan, “When we love something it is of value to us, and when something is of value to us we spend time with it, time enjoying it and time taking care of it.

Note : Artikel ini adalah inti pembicaraan di Seminar Pendidikan “Menjadi Guru Yang Menyenangkan, Inovatif dan Kreatif.” (Anjuran Yayasan Pendidikan Sinar Dharma)

*Andrew Ho adalah seorang pengusaha, motivator, dan penulis buku-buku best
seller.Kunjungi websitenya di : www.andrewho-uol.com

Good News For Sertified Teacher under Religion Department

BANDAR LAMPUNG (Lampost): happy news for madrasah teachers and religious teachers who pass the certification in 2008 and earlier. communicate more easily and
effectively. But how do you become a more confident English speaker?

Practise where you can, when you can. Any practice is good - whether you speak
to someone who is a native English speaker or not.

It's important to build your confidence. If possible, use simple English sentence
structure that you know is correct, so that you can concentrate on getting your
message across.

Try to experiment with the English you know. Use words and phrases you know
in new situations. Native English speakers are more likely to correct you if you use
the wrong word than if you use the wrong grammar. Experimenting with vocabulary
is a really good way of getting feedback.

Try to respond to what people say to you. You can often get clues to what
people think by looking at their body language. Respond to them in a natural way.

Try NOT to translate into and from your own language. This takes too much time
and will make you more hesitant.

If you forget a word, do what native English speakers do all the time, and say
things that 'fill' the conversation. This is better than keeping completely silent. Try
using um, or er, if you forget the word.

Don't speak too fast! It's important to use a natural rhythm when speaking English,
but if you speak too fast it will be difficult for people to understand you.

Try to relax when you speak - you'll find your mouth does most of the pronunciation
work for you. When you speak English at normal speed, you'll discover that many of
the pronunciation skills, such as linking between words, will happen automatically.

Remember, when speaking English…

Try to become less hesitant and more confident.

Don't be shy to speak - the more you do it, the more confident you'll become.

Remember to be polite - use "please" and "thank you" if you ask someone to do
something for you.

TYPE OF ENGLISH TEXTS IN READING

The followings are some examples of English texts taught in Senior High school Based on the KTSP Curriculum. The texts are taken from many sources I found in my surfing. I do hope it will be useful for English teachers and students who want to search and deepen the material about reading

1. Narrative

Long time ago there lived a boy named Malin Kundang who got a good successes a sailor. He had a wife and a ship.
One day he and his ship landed on his village of Pasir Panjang Padang. Every body come to his ship and greeted him, include his own mother. Malin Kundang ignored her. He didn’t admit that he was Malin Kundang.
Finally Malin Kundang’s mother said to him, “ If you don’t admit me as your mother, let God punish you and turn you into stone.’ Her curse came to reality and made Malin Kundang and his ship a monument for us to think about

2. Analytical Exposition

I personally think that English is the world’s most important language. Why do I say that?Firstly, English is an international language. It is spoken by many people all around the world, either as a first or second language.Secondly, English is also the key which opens doors to scientific and technical knowledge, which is needed for the economic and political development of many countries in the world.Thirdly, English is a top requirement of those seeking jobs. Applicants who master either active or passive English are more favorable than those who do not. From the fact above, it is obvious that everybody needs to learn English to greet the global era.
Sources:Cahyono, Kristiawan Dwi and Eka Purnama.2006. Communicative Competence 2B: A course in Acquiring English Communicative Competence, For Senior High School Level, Grade XI Semester 2. Jombang: CV Karunia Agung

3. Hortatory Exposition

The National examination result will be publicly enounced in next short time. Euphoria will flood for those who get success. In the other hand, It will be sorry to hear that there are some of them do not succeed in their national final examination. For those who succeed soon will think to decide; where will they be after graduating high school? Actually it will be easy to decide for those has been arranged and thought earlier but for those have not planned yet, it will be quite confusing.
Continuing study or looking for work is the primary choice among them. When they think about continuing study, they will think hard about the time and cost. How long the higher study will last? And how high is about the cost. In the same way, when they think about straightly seeking job, what skill and competence they have got is a big matter of questioning. So, doing both choices in the same time is an alternative.
Continuing study as well as seeking job is possibly done but it will be hard for them. Conventionally studying in the university needs much time to spend especially in the first year. It is true because they have to do and adapt a lot of things in their new higher school. it will be very hard to looking for job. Therefore it should come to their mind of continuing studying at higher school from their own home. As result, the available time will be more flexible for them. Then it will be very possible to seek job and get the appropriate one. This type of studying is publicly known as distance learning.
As the alternative method of studying, besides the conventional studying which students and the lecturer have to meet in the fixed time and place regularly, distance learning provides possibility to grow better. Possibly working and studying surely will create high quality graduate. Distance learning should appear as a considerable choice for them.

4. Descriptive

My bedroom is at the back part of the house. It is only three meters long and two and half meters wide. Both the door and the small window face a narrow corridor. there is a bed across from the door. A table and an old chair stand near the window. On the wall above the table a ten-Watt tube lamp lights the room and functions as a reading lamp as well. In the corner near the table there is a small cupboard where I put my clothes and some of my books, especially the old ones. Although the room is not large, I live comfortably in it.

5. Report

Many people call platypus duckbill because this animal has a bill like duckbill. Platypus is a native Tasmania and southern and eastern Australia.Platypus has a flat tail and webbed feet. Its body length is 30 to 45 cm and covered with a thick, and woolly layer of fur. Its bill is detecting prey and stirring up mud. Platypus’ eyes and head are small. It has no ears but has ability to sense sound and light.Platypus lives in streams, rivers, and lakes. Female platypus usually digs burrows in the streams or river banks. The burrows are blocked with soil to protect it from intruders and flooding. In the other hand, male platypus does not need any burrow to stay.

6. Review

Eyeglasses will become more and more important. It is not only because for protecting our eyes from the hot light but also for holding the trend. There are a lot of online sites which provides products of eyeglasses but Zenni Optical was on FOX news! is just the perfect one.
If we visit the site, we will easily catch various information about eyeglasses. The site is quite simple but very informative. It is real, easy and not complicated design. With quick loading this site will bring us quickly in to what we want. There is information about Variable Dimension Frames From Zenni. Titanium, aluminum and rimless frame are available. The eyeglasses are designed for different users. Eyeglasses for children, woman and man are available choice. Again, what makes it different is this site gives the Great Eyeglasses For Less cost. The product can be sold in cheap price because it has cut the marketing link. It straightly goes to the end user.

7. News Item

An Indonesian housemaid has been executed in Saudi Arabia after being convicted of killing her employer, the Saudi Interior Minister said. The woman was beheaded in the Southern Asir province in what was the second execution in the country. The maid was earlier found of suffocating her female boss and stealing her jewelry. Rape, murder and other serious crimes can carry the death penalty in the conservative desert kingdom.Last year, Saudi Arabia, which follow a strict interpretation of Syaria, Islamic law executed more than 130 people.
(Taken from: www.news.bbc.co.id)

8. Recount

Postcards always spoil my holidays. Last summer, I went to Italy. I visited museums and sat in public gardens. A friendly waiter taught me a few words of Italian. Then he lent me a book. I read a few lines, but I did not understand a word. Every day I thought about postcards. My holidays passed quickly, but I did not send any cards to my friends. On the last day I made s big decision. I got up early and bought thirty-seven cards. I spent the whole day in my room, but I did not write a single card!Taken from: Practice and Progress By L. G. Alexander

9. Spoof

Soon after he left college, Dave found one of his uncles who was very rich and had no children of his own died and left him a lot of money, so he decided to set up his own real estate agency.
Dave found a nice office. He bought some new furniture and moved in. he had only been there for e few hours when he heard someone coming toward the door of his office.
“It must be my first customer” Dave thought. He quickly picked up the telephone and pretended to be very busy answering an important call from someone in New York who wanted to buy a big and expensive house in the country.
The man knocked at the door while this was going on. He came in and waited politely for Dave to finish his conversation on the phone. Then the man said to Dave; “I am from the telephone company and I was sent here to connect your telephone”

10. Anecdote

The class is studying astronomy. The teacher points to a photograph, and says, "Does anyone know what this is? It's a comet."" A What?""A comet, Eddy. Don't you know what a comet is?""No!"Don't you know what they call a star with a tail?""Sure, Mickey Mouse!"

11. Discussion

Foxhunting is a subject that provokes very strong feelings. Many people believe that it is cruel to hunt a fox with dogs and totally agree with its ban. Many farmer and even conservationists, however, have always argue that the fox is a pest which attacks livestock and must be controlled.

(Taken from: www.bbc.co.uk)

12. Explanation text

The sun seems to rise in the morning, crosses the sky during the day and sets at night. However the sun does not actually move around the earth. Earth's turning on its axis makes it look as if the sun is moves. The earth makes a complete turn on its axis for 24 hours. It is called as rotation. It causes day and night. The earth also moves around the sun. It takes 365 days or a year. This process is called revolution. The revolution process causes the changes of the season

13. Procedure

Planting is a nice activity in our spare time. The following is guided information on how to plant a chili-plant easily. Here are the steps.Firstly, dry a handful seeding under the sunlightSecondly, put the seeding on the soil. It should be in open areaNext, wait it. There will come out the sprout after that let it be bigger. Finally, put it in another big pot. It will soon grow bigger and bigger and yield us some fresh chilies soon.

Simplified from: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Daniel_F_O'connor

14. I find it to be very useful now," Luh Made Sri Lestari Kariana, a student at Taman Rama Elementary School, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

"As a result, I also manage to have new friends from different nationalities," Luh said.

She acknowledged that her friendship with foreign students had enabled her to broaden her perspectives and encouraged her to meet more new people in the future.

"I will continue my junior high in Australia starting next month and hopefully be excited to meet and make new friends there," she said.

Ronald Ruslan, another student, said the school's international environment was the main reason he initially enrolled in the school.

"Maybe I would know few English words after all but I think I would hardly speak any English sentences if I decided not to study here in the first place," Ronald said.

Kariana and Ruslan were among 21 students who graduated from the elementary school Tuesday.

Most students said they would continue their education at Taman Rama Elementary School as they were comfortable with the school's chosen curriculum and the day-to-day use of the English language.

Sani, one of the student's parents, acknowledged she had enrolled her children at the school because of the international environment the school offered.

"As a parent, of course I want my children to experience more supportive learning environments so they can face a brighter future later on," Sani said.

Taman Rama School adopts the Cambridge International Primary Program (CIPP) that is designed for children aged 5-11. Not only is every subject taught in English as part of the program, but the teacher is trained to introduce the usage of the English language in daily activities.

"Actually the main target from all courses is to prepare the students so that he or she will be able to continue schooling abroad," Michael MC Brien, the school's CIPP operational director, said.

He said this target had already been met with most students continuing their schooling abroad.

"More than 95 percent of our students here have managed to go to universities abroad with Malaysia, Singapore and Australia as their favorites," he said.

writtenn by :
Dicky Christanto

My Intensive Class…..

Recently, my institution gives me a new duty as an instructor in intensive class. This class is designed to deepen some lesson i.e. English, Arabic and Math. It is not compulsory class. The participant of this program is students who have high motivation in learning those subjects. Here, I’ve a charge of teaching the students from social class. There are 19 students consist of 16 girls and 3 boys. Actually there are more than 100 students in social class but I’m out of my mind why the students are not interested in joining the class. To let you know that it is free for them to participate in this class without any money to spend. To answer the phenomenon, I’ve some assumptions to the problem why the students have low motivation in joining the class.

First, the intensive class is carried out in the afternoon. It is started on 2 pm after the main term finish. So the students feel exhausted in studying. If they join the class means that they have to sit in the class studying from 7 am up to 3.30 pm.

Second, they really have low motivation in studying. What I mean is they are not interested the three subjects offered. So they do not take it. They would rather go home and relax themselves than study in the class.

Third, some students have their own schedule in studying. They can not arrange their time because they have joined course or in house training.

Fourth, the committee of the program does not tell the students about the advantages of the intensive class and they also do not set the main goal of the program. So the students think that the program is the same with the regular class.

Based on the assumptions above, the instructor has a hard job to convince the students joining the program that they will get something new that they won’t find in the regular class. Beside that, the instructor should modify the teaching learning process so that the student will feel cozy. It can be applied by many techniques such as finding the interesting material presented in the class, managing the classroom as comfort as possible for the students.

Making the situation of the class different is the way I have ever done to my students. The following pictures show when my class is studying in the garden. It happens when we feel hot studying in the classroom. I invite them to find the chilly place to study. We study under bamboo tree. Look… they enjoy the teaching learning process, don’t they???

A teacher with his hobby

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>Being a teacher is a nice job for me. I’ve started my teaching 2 years after graduating from my college. Totally, in two years, I didn’t sharpen my science in teaching English instead of expanding my experience in graphic design. I knew graphic design coincidentally when I stayed in my brother’s house in Java island. He is a calendar publisher in Yogyakarta with more than hundred thousand exemplars in a year. My brother asked me to design a calendar ordered by one of an Islamic Institution in Java. By having limitation talent in operating a computer, I tried to explore my creativity. And a new hobby was found……

I frequently use two computer programs to design a certain design project. They are Corel Draw and Photoshop. Corel draw is a special program designed to create graphic, text, curve etc. it has many tools to create and combine graphic to be an artistic design. I used Corel draw 9 When I was started operating this program for the first time. And now I use Corel draw 11 although Microsoft has launched the newer version. I consider it has simple tool with sharp color and is easier to handle than the new version. The second program I used in graphic design is Photoshop. It is focused in organizing and manipulating a picture. It can combine some pictures to be one picture perfectly. In a glance, we cannot determine its manipulation. I feel amazed with this program because it can change the color, shape and size in the same time. By having no formal education, I try to use it to explore my imagination.

According to me, Graphic design is an activity to explore and sharpen the art of imagination. Imagination doesn’t appear in a certain time. It can appear automatically in the morning, in the dream or even in the middle of the night. So, I often sit in the front of my computer in the middle of the night when I find an inspiration suddenly. I can spend more that 5 hours in front of computer in a day. When I was in Java, I used to spend mostly my time in the night. I had to finish three to five projects every day. It is mostly in the form of calendar. Recently, I do it as my hobby means I rarely do that since I have other duty as teacher. I design a project if there is a request from my friend. It is not only in the form of calendar but it is also in the form of pamphlet, sticker, logo and banner. I do not force my self to do that if I have a duty in teaching.

If you are interested in the field of graphics design, you have to be creative in creating and arranging the graphic so that you will have your own style. You have to show that you have an independent way of thinking. Beside that, you must keep exploring your imagination without feeling bored. The pictures presented are some of products of my imagination in graphic design. Hopefully you can join me in this field and let share our idea each other to sharpen our mind in the art.

Show your power of imagination!!!

When students are proud of their own mistakes…

I want to share my problem related to my students who have a strange manner. It is started when I am in charge of teaching Social Class instead of teaching in Science class. It is generally known that when the teacher wants to start teaching in social class, she or he has to prepare everything well especially concerning to the mental preparation. It is because social class has complicated human resources and sometime low motivated students. But it doesn’t seem true 100% since I analyze by my self that there are some students who has high motivation in learning.

I teach three classes. In every class I find certain student who seems to be a source of difficulty of the successfulness of teaching learning process. He often makes trouble and disturbs the allocation of the time to study. Sometime I have to spend about more that 20 minutes to discuss about the problem rather than discuss the material. One of the most frequently thing discuss is about the discipline such as coming late, delaying homework, not wearing uniform, long hair and nail etc.

Actually I as the teacher have informed them before about this. But in fact, the students frequently repeat it again for more than twice. I know that they are actually aware of what they have done is mistake and they have broken the rule as well. But why they feel proud of their mistake??

I am afraid if the mistake is used by them as means of popularity. What I mean here is they do that deliberately to make them popular within the community. Is it true?? Popularity is needed by all people to satisfy the soul. But it is absolutely not good when it is done by wrong way. This is a small phenomenon of the recent era. I am dizzy of thinking about it….

OSIS REORGANIZATION IN MAN PRINGSEWU

Today is September 24th, 2008. I go to my office at 07.30 a.m. Usually, I go to my office at 7.00 a.m everyday. But this month is special month since it is Ramadhan month. Government through our principle announces that teaching and learning activity is started at 7.30 am everyday. Actually I have no class today. Related to an important ceremony will be carried out in our school, I’ve to join it. It is OSIS reorganization ceremony. This ceremony, however, is the closing ceremony for facing Idul Fitri day. The principal, Mr. Alamsyah says that we’ll be off for about 2 weeks started from September 26th up to October 13 2008. Hearing this news, all the students shout together loudly and happily. When the main program started, the principle takes the oath to new generation of OSIS board. Mr. Ahmad Fauzan as a new OSIS board advisor says that the new management is ready to carry out all the programs arranged before despite of some financials problems faced by our institution. He replaces my position as OSIS advisor as I want to focus my activity in teaching and learning in the class solely. I have become OSIS advisor for about a year. Here you are some pictures describing its moment.

Technology in our classrooms

Development pundits always suggest that to improve a country, you just need to work on two things: Infrastructure and education. The rest, like the economy and people's wellbeing will follow.
One should not forget that only five years ago, Prof. Larry Cuban of Stanford University found that only 1 in 10 teachers were using computers in the classroom (in the U.S.).

Now, computers are an integral part of teachers' daily activities.

Nowadays, in most American classrooms teachers use computers by accessing their own school's website or subscribed 3rd party learning sites for learning materials. Most of them are also animated and utilizing multimedia technology. Students of K-12 (or from kindergarten to high school) now use computers to do homework and assignments.

What is wrong in this picture? One may think that the American government overspent its budget on education. Some people who are also taxpayers are complaining that the budget for schools is too much and is not scrutinized properly.

But what about in Indonesia? Teachers are known for their low salaries because of budget limitations, uncertain futures because of their "extended" part-time status, and burned-out minds because of a lack of regular training. Not to mention their workplace conditions: School buildings and facilities are falling apart or in many cases have never been renovated.

We did not address these problems when they first emerged in the past when we still had thick pockets. Now, the story has changed. The world is experiencing a food and fuel crisis. What can we expect from a government that is struggling to pay its own oil subsidies day-in, day-out? The answer: More regulations.

The government has been enacting regulations to certify positions in the teaching profession from elementary to university levels. If you are a teacher, you must be certified. This certification program looks promising, but it falls short of solving our real problems.

What can a certified teacher do in a classroom?

Not much, although it takes his or her creativity to maintain the learning enterprise. Teachers are not witches or wizards who can simply cast a spell or flick a magic wand to develop nice classrooms, interesting textbooks, high-speed Internet connections, or healthy meals for children (or turn out bright students -- ed). They are helpless without the government's good judgment in spending public money.

Technology can help. Computers are not a luxury item today, so we must use them. But technology cannot just be handed to schools and everything will run by itself. Technology must be integrated into teachers' activities. Furthermore, technology must be user-friendly, less hardware-oriented and more human.

Now that American schools have smart LCD projectors and smart boards, how can Indonesian schools hope to keep up in the technology invasion? Our schools need to do at least five things.

First, an overall assessment of technology currently used in classrooms here.

Second, to develop a benchmark of an appropriate level of technology use in schools, for example by evaluating a U.S. example.

Third, calculate the gap between the existing condition and expected goal (referring to the benchmark).

Fourth, search the most efficient methods and technology that could enable schools to reach this goal within a set timeframe.

Fifth, collaborate with other schools within the country and abroad.

Developing a sister-school scheme is one example. There are many ways to develop productive cooperation between schools and businesses in this global era.

A clean, technology-enriched and well-lit classroom is every teacher's dream. We just need to make sure that we are aiming at this goal, seriously and tirelessly.

written by

Totok Amin Soefijanto

Teacher and teaching

This morning I went to school after going home from traditional market. It was my daily activities before teaching in the school. When I wanted to enter my class my senior colleague said to me that he wanted to enter my class to give daily examination. He asked me to be a superintendent. I said ok. I entered my class then. Having read Al-Qur’an for about 15 minutes with my students in the class, I told them that they would have daily examination instead of studying English. I could see from their face that they were surprised since they had no preparation to answer the question. One of the students raised his hand proposing to me to have about 5 minutes to read the book. Because of limited time given, I decided to continue the activity. My senior colleague entered my class and distributed the question sheets to my students.

5 minutes passing smoothly when I noticed a students sitting in the back line acting something silly. He took a piece of paper in his drawer. I came closer to him making sure what’s happened. Surprisingly, I saw he brought his friend’s answer sheet. Spontaneously, I took the paper without any questions. I often noticed him doing a silly thing in the class. He frequently spoke abruptly as I explained the material in the class. He merely tried to attract his classmate attention. After convincing my self about what’s happened, I asked him to put his chair as a place to write the answers. I let him squatting.

Then I came closer to the owner of the paper. She was extremely nervous when I gave some questions about how the paper moved to the others. Since she could not give convincing answer, I wrote a note in her answer sheet that there was something trouble with her. Then I asked her to submit it by her self to related teacher.

Actually, all my students seem to be good student. When a certain student breaks the rule such as coming late and not bringing a book, they seem to be bothered. As a teacher I face difficulties in whether I continue my material or I postpone the class to handle the problem. Usually I let them to write “Istighfar” as many as possible based on the level of wrongness.

Again and again being a teacher is complicated. May everybody will understand what the teacher do is for the students beneficence.

How to be success in career

After discussing some problems about career in office with my friend this morning, I write this posting as the conclusion of the discussion. To be success in every side of our life is extremely expected by every body. Success won’t come spontaneously in our career without any struggle. The following ideas may be taken into consideration as a way to be success in our career.

Be punctual. If we want to succeed in our career, we must be discipline in time. Come on time or 15 minutes earlier to our office. It will give us a chance to prepare our work.

Be active. Try to ask an explanation to an unclear instruction. Consequently, by having lot of question, we will get lot of advantages. Don’t be afraid of asking question to the certain unclear instruction we do not know

Socialize with surroundings. It is important to have a good relationship with our partner in the office. They can help us to solve the problem as well when we have unsolved problem.

Be a friendly people. Try to spread our smile to every people around us.

Be confident. We can if we think we can. Show to all of people that we can handle the entire task given.

Make a list of priority. It will help you to finish our work on time.

Do what we can do right away. Don’t delay our work for we will have many things to do in the same time. Delaying our work is bad habit. So leave it.

Wish us success in our life. Amin....

MAN PRINGSEWU GALLERY

Hallo visitors…. It is started when I remembered what was happened in my class this morning. When I taught in the class, I found a student didn’t bring English book with him. I asked him why? He said that he had left his book in his house. He added that actually he had prepared it before departing to school. After some considerations such as it’s not for the first time for him to do such silly thing and I often noticed him not bringing book at all, I asked him standing outside the class. I was surprised when I saw that a senior teacher teaching next to my class did what I did. He asked about 10 students to stand outside because of not completing their work to resume one of the chapters in a subject related.

After doing that I checked my students’ attendance list. I got two students not attending class without any information. I had familiar with the track records of these students. They frequently made many cases in the school. They often smoked in the back of canteen secretly, not wearing complete uniform etc. Surprisingly, when I went home from teaching, I saw them sitting in the front of stall next to the school, wearing uniform. I questioned my self “ why didn’t they enter the class in the morning?”. I tried to call their class advisor. He answered that they didn’t give him any information.

Based on the story above, what should I do to my students? To be known that teacher should tell the students what’s wrong and what’s right. Teacher does not only give the material to the students and explaining the material of the subject. But the teacher also has to give norm values in order to make the students aware which one is better for them. So, I have planning to warn them not to do that again in the next time.

Next question is “ What about if they do that again in the next time? “. The answer is “It is different cases with different solution”.

Being a Teacher = Colorful Job

My Personal Teaching Experience

I am a 28 years old English teacher in MAN Pringsewu. I have been teaching there for about 3.5 years. I have ever taught in some institutions e.g DCC Pringsewu and Celtics English course. Due to some considerations, I decide to focus my teaching activity in two institutions. At time being, I am also teaching in my almamater MA Al-Ma’ruf Margodadi. It’s about 40 km from my address. I should spend an hour to go there. Tracking mount hill road, surrounded by jungle. It is not about money or I have no job. It is based on my “calling soul”. Even though it is quite far I decide to teach there since it is my father inheritance.

Teaching in MAN Pringsewu possibly the place I can take many advantages. Besides doing my job as civil servant, I could increase my capability in English as well. As I have mentioned in the last posting that it is about two years I did not practice my English actively. Because of the job procedure it is compulsory for me to deepen my mastery in English. I try to give the best to my student by having a new method of teaching in the class. I want them to have a hope to me to come to their class everyday.

Many things happened when I teach in my class. Start from having fun together with my students up to giving punishment to “Naughty” one. Why I say like that?? As I have written in the title above “being a teacher = colorful job” I want to share my colorful experience in teaching. I had ever cried together with my students in the class when I gave the material to them. It happened when I gave the material about narrative text. I gave the story to them entitled The apple tree. After giving the generic structure of the text I explained to them about the moral message could be taken from the story. The story is a representation of a son and parent. I told my student that we as a son often came to our parent when we needed their help. But when we had a joy we forget them. While explaining it my students began crying and unconsciously my eyes full of tears as well (for complete story please open my related posting )

With the limited capability in English I keep trying to improve my mastery in English. Fortunately I have many friends whom I can discuss my problem in English with. I still keep in touch with my classmate in Lampung University to share my idea and search a new better one.

Fortunately, my institution frequently sends me to training, meeting and English Discussion where It can makes me familiar with English anymore. My sweet memory is when my institution sent me to 3 days English teacher training for MAN in MAN 1 Bandar Lampung in the beginning of August 2008. I was extremely surprised when the committee of the program mentioned my name in the front of all English teachers as the best participant in the training.

Beside that, even though I have only 3.5 years teaching experience, the government has invited me to join certification program for Teacher. Having some procedures I have to step such as completing porto folio documents, I must join 9 days training for passing this program. Thanks god… I could pass this hard training. Why I called it hard? Because I had no time to take rest during the training. All participants should involve actively in every session of the training. The participant should practice their teaching in the front of English teacher and qualified instructor.

From this posting, I try to find some inputs from the reader to a better teaching in my class and to improve my mastery in English. Please give me some comments related to the way of my writing and some useful suggestions.

One Side of My Life

" I am Lucky..."

That’s possibly the most appropriate phrase uttered to show many lucky things happened in my life. It was started when my father- H. Ma’ruf (the late)- gave me a name “Faizin” means “Lucky”. He added Muhammad in the front of it to show that I am a Muslim. I am the 8th Children in my family with 6 brothers and 2 sisters. All of my brothers and sisters graduated from Pondok Pesantren and I am lucky because I am the only son continued to University.

I had my Elementery school in Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah in My village. Finishing my study, my parents sent me to MTs Al-Ma’ruf Margodadi located about 10 Meters behind my house. 3 years studied in MTs Al-Ma’ruf Margodadi was the time when I had a colorful era because I started to explore my talent. I didn’t know why, I had a big curiosity in a new thing like art, vocal, sport, organization, English etc. Actually, after graduating from MTs I wanted to continue my study to Jawa but Madrasah Aliyah Al-Ma’ruf established then. So my father “forced” me to enter MA Al-Ma’ruf Margodadi as the 1st generation with only 6 students at that time.

That was possibly my hardest education era I’d to face since I had to study by having a limited facilities and teachers. Sometimes I had to study in a garage, mosque without table and chair. We had no fix lesson schedule in my class. If we had a class, my teacher searched us over there and over here. We rarely got full day learning. We had one or two subjects everyday. But now, MA Al-Ma’ruf has changed in to one of the famous Schools in my region.

I said to my self “Don’t give up…. I can If I think I can”. So, after graduating from Madrasah Aliyah, I wanted to show that I could continue my study to an outstanding university in Lampung. My father supported me to continue my study to one of university in Lampung. I chose “Lampung University”.

At that time, Lampung University was the main target of senior highs student graduate to continue their study. With more than 12.000 applicants I had to compete with I chose English Department as my 1st major and Bahasa Indonesia as the 2nd one. Even though I was the first generation of my School with only 6 classmates, I am lucky, I was accepted as Lampung university students in English Department on 1997. I had to compete with many brilliant students from favorite Senior High School in Lampung. With a limited talent in English, I tried to pass my study. I had many new kind friends in my class. I had many professional lecturers as well as many facilities provided by my university. It was quite far different to my study in MA Al-Ma’ruf.

The first year in Lampung University was the hardest era in my college because I had to be familiar with English. My lecturer didn’t notice me because there were many students had well mastery in English. But, in the second year they started noticing me because I tried to give my opinion whenever the lecturer asked us about something. When I studied, I lived in a special boarding house provided by Lampung University namely “Asrama Raja Basa” it had very complete facilities. I am lucky staying in it because it’s free and I could help my parent minimizing the budget for my study as well. Time went by, I could finish my study in Lampung university for about 5 years. Then I am lucky because my family allowed me to continue my study to Jawa in Pondok Pesantren Tegalrejo Magelang for three months and Hidayatul Mubtadiin Purworejo for two years. In Jawa, I didn’t really focus in learning because I had a part job as a graphic designer. My institution had a special part to support financial problem to develop our institution by having a Calendar Publisher. It had big customer from around Jawa Island with more than 150.000 exemplar/ year. I am lucky there, because I found my new talent in computer especially in graphic design. After two years adventure, I went back to my motherland since I had said that I would stay there not for long period. As I went back to my village, Religion Department opened new civil servant test. There were 2 English teachers needed during the test. Actually I would not apply my application because I rarely practiced my English for long time. It was my oldest brother supported me to apply for that. He said that I must join it because I had a good opportunity to be accepted. After that, I applied my application, following many procedures from completing the requirements up to joining written test. It was not easy accepted as a civil servant. One of my friends had tried applying an application to be a civil servant more than 12 times and he failed..!!! I had to compete with many seniors of mine from Lampung University. I am lucky because it was the first time for me to apply to be a civil servant and I passed it….. Praise to Allah..!!!. Not only accepted as a civil servant that made me delighted but the placement of my office also made me happy. I am lucky because the government put me in MAN Pringsewu. It was located not far from my village…

To sum up, It is only a simple example for us that LUCKY plays an important rule in our life….everybody has one side of his/her life that he/she doesn’t know. Thanks to every part of my life that supports me till I can survive up to now. Every thing is back to Alloh……

Connect Internet via Bluetooth

Secara garis besar, langkah2 untuk connect internet via bluetooth modem adalah sbb :

1. A little boy loved to come and played with it everyday. He climbed the tree, ate its apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by….. the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree everyday. One day the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. The tree asked the boy: “come and play with me”. The boy replied:” I am no longer kid, I don’t play around you anymore, I want toys. I need money to buy them”. The tree said:” sorry…. I don’t have money, but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So you will have money”. The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. The tree asked the boy: “come and play with me”. The boy replied:” I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my wife and my children. We need house for shelter. Can you help me?.” The tree said:” sorry…. But I don’t have house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house.” The boy was so excited. He cut all the branches off the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day , the boy returned and the tree was delighted. The tree asked the boy: “come and play with me”. The boy replied:” I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax my self. Can you give me a boat?”. The tree said:” use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” The boy was so excited. He cut the trunk to make a boat . he went sailing and never showed up for long time.

Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. The tree said to the boy: sorry my boy but I don’t have anything for you anymore. No more apple for you..” the boy replied “ I don’t have teeth to bite” “no more trunk for you to climbed on” “ I have no power to climb on” the tree said with tears. “I really can’t give you anything.. the only thing left is my dying roots” the boy replied “ I don’t need much now, just place to rest. I am tired after all these years”. The tree said” good.. old tree roots is the best place to rest. Come, come sit down with me and rest”. The boy sat down and the tree was so glad and smiled with tears……

Feel it.....

Teaching English Through A Song

This is one of the example of song that i gave to my students in listening Comprehension

I ommited some words then students completed them while they were listening the song

Mother how are you today

Mother, how are you today?
Here is a _________from your__________
With me __________is ok.
Mother, how are you today?
Mother, don't__________, I'm fine.
I Promise to _________you this__________
This time there will be no __________.
Mother, how are you today?
I found the __________of my dreams.
Next time you will _________to know him.
Many things __________while I was away.
